The monument was erected in March 1809 by local people in honor of Yi Yuhwa, the head of Yangsan County in the late Joseon Dynasty who built an embankment and turned the waterway to the outskirts of Daericheon Stream that flowed through the Gupo Bridge in the old days as the stream often overflowed due to heavy rains.
The monument that used to be originally in Biseokgol was moved to a flowerbed at the entrance of Gupo 1-dong Community Service Center, with a newly built pedestal.

A cathedral built in Gupo in 1958. Since the olden times, Gupo has been the center of waterway transportation and an area where Catholics gathered. After the cathedral was established, it put together not only western Busan but also surrounding areas such as Gimhae and Yangsan. In 1965, the construction of the present cathedral was completed with the support of Catholics, nearby air force unit, and Education Office. Gupo Cathedral, which became a comfortable resting place during the chaotic times after the Korean War, is particularly famous for its beautiful architecture. Built in the shape of a ship by German priest and architect Alvin, Gupo Cathedral stands like a reassuring ship to cross the sea of life safely.
