Starting from the Keochilsan county
of the ancient three kingdoms, Buk-gu was known as the Keochilsan
county of the Shila Kingdom. At the time of the unified kingdom
of Shila, it became the Dongpyun-hyun of Dongnae-gun.
During the dynasty, Buk-gu was called the Dongpyun-hyun and
Keumji of Yangsan-gun. However, in the Joseon Dynasty, it belonged
to Dongnae-bu. In
1914, Buk-gu became the Sasang- Myeon of Dongnae Gupo-eup
due to the reorganization of the Bu and Gun.
On January 1, 1963, Buk Gu was annexed by and Busanjin-gu
Gupo and Sasang branch offices came under control of Busan
City since the city was promoted to Jikhal City by the Law
No. 1173.
From 1968 to 1975, Buk-gu seized many opportunities to acquire
land for its expansion to encompass 2.94 million and 6 thousands
pyun (9.73 million and 9 thousands square meter).
On October 1st, 1975, Busanjin-Gu Gupo and Sasang branch
offices were reorganized so they would be under direct administrative
control of Busan Jikhal City by the City Ordinance No. 870
and named as Bukbu branch office.
On February 15, 1978, Buk-gu was reorganized to become Buk-gu
under the direct administrative control of Busan Jikhal City
by presidential decree No. 8758 and expanded its administrative
areas by annexing 17 Dongs which include the surrounding area
of Myeongji-Myeon and Garak-Myeon Daisa-Ri, Bonjon-Ri, Singdok-Ri,
Jaedo-Ri and Gyeongsangbukdo.
On May 1st, 1983, Gangseo branch office came under the direct
administrative control of Busan Jikhal City by City Ordinance
No. 1833. May 1, 1988, the administrative control of Buk-gu
Health Center was transferred from the City to Buk-gu control
due to the establishment of self-rule Buk-gu.
Thus Buk-gu¡¯s main health center and 40 health care branches
are actively engaged in their functions. Also, on January
1st, 1989 they divided to Gangseo Gu.
On September 1, 1989, the Water Department was inactivated
and named as Buk-gu Service Center by the establishment of
Waterworks Service Center.
On January 1, 1995, Busan Jikhal City was renamed as Busan
Metropolitan City. Also on March 1, 1995, Sasang-Gu separated
from Buk-gu by restitution of Law No. 4802.
As of January 1st, 1996, Buk-gu contains a population of
282 thousands people and administrative offices of 3 bureaus,
3 offices, 15 departments, 16 sections and 11 Dongs. Buk-gu
makes the best efforts to improve the living standards and
quality of life of its population.
